A series of workshops: Breaking Away From Print .

In these interactive workshops participants learn to ‘break away from print’ and explore techniques to present and share oral storytelling sessions with children.

Breaking Away From Print is designed for Early Year’s Practitioners, Foundation Stage and Key Stage One and two teachers, Play therapists, Childminders, Play Workers, After School Club Workers.

Using ‘Breaking Away From Print’ as the base, further focused workshops enable participants to choose specific aspects of interest to their work.

The ‘Base’ material of Breaking Away From Print includes:

Breaking Away From Print: Day 1: Taking Storytelling Outdoors.

Children need extensive opportunities to engage in environmental activities as a means to promoting their holistic development and to establish their sense of place in the world.

In this ‘one day’ outdoor, energetic, workshop, the facilitators focus on the natural world as a springboard to promote oral storytelling in outdoor spaces.

Methods used include:

Traditional Stories – Using outdoor space to breathe life into these old favourites.

Selecting story material appropriate to the seasons and ‘the moment’.

How to explore and utilise outdoor space to maximum effect for story sessions.

Breaking Away From Print: Day 2: Taking Storytelling Further Outdoors.

This one day workshop evolved from popular demand following

Breaking Away From Print: Day 1: Taking storytelling outdoors.

This is also an outdoor based workshop in which participants further their experience and practice of working with story outdoors.

Methods used include:

Creating story sculptures: a tool for looking at the world through the eyes of a child – and encouraging children to become storytellers.

Creating and working with story trails.

Movement, gesture and voice: adapting to working in outdoor spaces.

Spontaneous storytelling through the seasons – activities.

Breaking Away From Print: Enhancing Story Times for Children

(This can be run as a full or half day workshop)

The focus of this workshop is on participants experiencing and engaging in tried and tested ways to ‘lift’ and enhance story times in school and early years settings.

Methods used include:

Listening to and engaging in interactive storytelling sessions for children.

Compare and contrast the benefits for story reading / storytelling with and for children.

Developing strategies for encouraging children to become storytellers.

Breaking Away From Print:

Promoting Children’s Listening Skills and Language Development Through Storytelling

(This can be run as a full or half day workshop)

In this workshop delegates consider and experience how children’s listening skills and language development may be enhanced through shared experiences of storytelling.

Methods used include:

Activities to help children develop their vocal range and develop vocal muscles.

Story Sharing:

Improvisation – weaving story rounds with children.

Using props to help children to take ‘ownership’ of the story – they will recall and repeat many times.

Breaking Away From Print: Using story to promote the language

of babies and young children.

(half day workshop)

This workshop will be of specific interest to parents, crèche workers, and early year’s practitioners working with babies and very young children. Participants experience how children’s language acquisition and development may be enhanced through the shared experiences of storytelling.

Methods used include

Looking at the language development of babies and young children.

Listening to and engaging in interactive storytelling with material that has appeal to babies and young children.

Song and story activities to help children develop their vocal range and develop vocal muscles.

Using movement, gesture and voice to make meaning clear to babies and young children.
